What is a dedicated IP address?

An IP address is a unique series of numbers that identifies a computer or domain on the Internet. Most web hosting accounts on shared web servers have the same IP address as one or more other accounts in the web hosting industry.

A dedicated IP address is an address used by a single web hosting account. The primary reasons for having a dedicated IP address are:

  • Using a private (that is, not shared) SSL certificate, which requires that the domain have a dedicated IP address
  • Accessing the website or log in via FTP by IP address instead of the domain name or server name
  • Protection from sharing an IP address that is blacklisted due to spam or other unauthorized activity by another server user
  • Better site performance during high traffic periods
